the track entered the top ten numbers in various radio stations in
Tanzania.
He plunged into the music career by performing on stage in 1993 when he was still a Standard Seven pupil at Mdote Primary School in Muheza, Tanga. Before that in 1990, he and his brother were transferred to Tanga Region where they completed primary school at Mdote in Muheza. During those days, his brother used to imitate other people’s lyrics by writing them down and performing at school. When he was still in Form Two, Mwanafalsafa managed to form a crew known as Black Skin with his schoolmates Robilus and Getheerics in 1995-97. In 1996, he managed to clinch the third position in the Tanga region hip-hop competition. Mwanafalsafa returned to Dar es Salaam in 1998 and joined the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), where he studied for four months. However, he quit DIT to pursue A-level studies at Ununio Islamic High School, where he majored in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM). After completing A-level studies, in August 2000 he plunged seriously into the world of music by composing lyrics while waiting for DJ Bonie Love of Mawingu Records to start producing his music. Under Mawingu Records, he has managed to release his debut album known as Mwanafalsafani in 2002.

JOSEPH HAULE "PROFESSOR JAY" BIOGRAPHY
Joseph Haule (born December 29, 1975), popularly known as Professor Jay,
is a Tanzanian hip hop artist. He is one of the prominent representants
of the “Bongo Flava” Tanzanian hip hop subgenre, which mixes elements
from both Western hip hop and the Tanzanian tradition
(including swahili lyrics as well as an activist attitude towards
Tanzanian social issues such as HIV/AIDS, wealth, inequality, and
political corruption).
He started rapping in 1994 as a member of the group Hard Blasters, best known for their hit “Chemsha Bongo” (then he used stage name Nigga J) from their first album, “Funga Kazi”. Only one year later, they won the title of best hip-hop group in Tanzania.
During his solo career which he started in 2001, he has released
number of hits, including “Nikusaidiaje” and “Zali la Mentali (feat Juma Nature)”. Other songs released by Professor Jay include “Piga Makofi” and “Yataka Moyo”. Just like Mr. II,
he is a pioneering Tanzanian MC, who have remained some of the most
popular hip hop musicians in Tanzania, despite influx of many new
bidders. Also similar to Mr. II his lyrics often have political
messages. In one of his songs he imitates an elder politician and
ridicules the fake promises they all mindlessly spew as they are trying
to get elected. The song continues with a chorus saying the words “Ndio
Mzee” which means “Yes Elder”. This represents the brain washing of the
public as politicians make these false promises over and over. It is
interesting to note however, that after this song was produced, the
president of Tanzania referenced the lyrics in one of his speeches,
which acknowledged the presence of Bongo Flava and the success of
Professor Jay’s political lyrics.
His first album, “Machozi, Jasho na Damu,” gained instant recognition for which Professor Jay won several awards. He attained other awards such as the best hip-hop album in Tanzania with his second album, “Mapinduzi halisi“.

JUMA KASSIM "JUMA NATURE" BIOGRAPHY
Juma Nature a.k.a. Sir Nature (born Juma Kassim
Ally, in 1980) is a Tanzanian hip hop artist and a singer. He is the
founder and member of a Temeke group called Wanaume Family,
an informal group of rappers from the poor side of Dar es Salaam.
Nature is one of the best, well known and most creative artists in the
Bongo Flava Swahili hip hop genre, not only is he a great composer and
uniquely talented rap artist but also gifted with a soulful and touching
voice. In his newest album, “Bongo Flava: Swahili Rap from Tanzania”,
many of the lyrics which are in his tracks include current problems
within his country. Some problems he raps about include, “HIV
AIDS” the difficulty of meeting basic needs, class and wealth barriers,
and holding your head high despite everything”. One of Nature’s well
renowned songs is “Umoja wa Tanzania” which talks about a celebration
within Tanzania and the sense of unity that it has exemplified. “Utajiju” (“it’s up to you”) from Juma Nature’s album Ubin-Adam Kazi, is a song about people who like to poke their noses into others’ business.
The other main reason for his popularity throughout East Africa is of
course the topics of his songs, which deal with real and pertinent
issues to the majority of local people. “Umoja wa Watanzania”
from his 2004 album Ugali, for example, pleads for peaceful resolution
to political misunderstandings between two rival parties, the ruling CCM
and CUF, reminding people of what could be the outcome of a political
crisis.
Wanaume Family is a unit of different artists namely Juma Nature,
Wachuja Nafaka, GWM / Gangsters with Matatizo (Problems), Wangoto
Family, and Gangwe Mobb. Wanaume Family developed with the aim of
sharing ideas on how to use Swahili hip hop positively, national and
international promotion and using their unity as a means of helping
other upcoming artists.
The sense of their togetherness is often seen in their performances
with their creative one line “mapanga Shwaaa! Shwaaaa!” dance which
drives fans to a near frenzy. And their unique dancing style that of
kicking high and jumping up and down and doing the neck dance, is simply
breathtaking. No wonder they now get invited to perform in front of
elite audiences. The Wanaume Family group split in November 2006. Nature
put together a new group under the name of Wanaume Halisi, featuring
Luteni Kalama, Baba Levo, Dollo, Richie One, Bob Q, BK, D Chief, Maripo,
Mzimu and Inspekta Haroun.
